Purchasing Miles

Normally, miles are purchased from points.com for a cost of $27.50 per 1,000 miles, plus a 7.5% tax recovery fee.

The best publicly available offer was: buy 40,000-100,000 miles, get 60% more. Transactions must be completed between 6:00 AM PT September 13, 2023 and 11:59 PM PT September 16, 2023 to be eligible for bonus miles. If buy a minimum of 40,000 miles you would pay $1,182.50 ($1,100.00 + $82.50) for 64,000 miles (40,000 + 24,000 bonus), which is a rate of 1.85 ¢/mi.

Surcharges

Alaska Mileage Plan passes on fuel surcharges for travel on some partner airlines. Specifically, these apply for travel on British Airways, Hainan Airlines, and Icelandair. Fortunately they don’t apply for travel on other partner airlines.

Notes

  • A $12.50 USD nonrefundable fee per person, each way, will be collected for awards booked on a partner airline.
  • Alaska Mileage Plan has a particularly generous policy for booking stopovers on award tickets. You get one stopover for each one-way ticket, which means two stopovers when you fly round-trip!
  • Alaska Mileage Plan charges the same amount for OW and RT awards on Korean Air.
